Extra police powers have been put in place in Mitcham after a man was shot in the area and males were found carrying machetes.

Police were called to Miles Road on Tuesday, January 9 to reports of a shooting in a car park.

He was taken to hospital where his condition was assessed as not life-threatening or life-changing.

An investigation is underway and any witnesses are asked to call 101 quoting 3884/09Jan.

Shortly after the shooting, several males carrying machetes were also found in the area.

Three men were detained, and police enquiries remain ongoing.

The Metropolitan Police has said it is not currently known if the two incidents are linked.

As police investigate, a dispersal authority has been put in place in Cricket Green Figges Marsh and Lavender Fields.

This was put in place at 2pm yesterday (Wednesday, January 10) and will remain in place until 2pm today.

Merton Police tweeted: “A dispersal authority has been put in place in Cricket Green, Figges Marsh and Lavender Fields areas.

“This is between 1400hrs 10th Jan an 1400hrs 11th Jan, following serious violence in the area.”

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called at 15:06hrs on Tuesday, 9 January to reports of a shooting in a car park in Miles Road, Mitcham

“Officers attended along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance.

“A man was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound.

“His condition was assessed as not life-threatening or life-changing.

“An investigation is under way and enquiries are ongoing.

“Any witnesses are asked to call 101 quoting CAD 3884/09Jan.”
