An initiative to create the UK's first zero-carbon sustainable suburb is gathering speed in Sutton.

Last week, Hackbridge celebrated an entire week dedicated to helping its residents unite to design a sustainable suburb for the future.

A council spokeswoman said: "Residents tell us they are excited about the vision for Hackbridge and the ambitious scale of that vision."

The week included a series of speed-dating style workshops for residents and businesses to share their ideas on how Sutton can achieve zero-carbon status by 2025.

Council leaer Sean Brennan said: "People living and working in the area are true champions of the environment and it is their ideas, their energy and their enthusiasm that will help transform Hackbridge and ultimately Sutton.

"With the Beddington Zero Energy Development (BedZed), this area has long been a showcase for green living.

"Hackbridge Week is an opportunity for the community to decide how we make Hackbridge a better place for everyone. We intend to set a precedent of sustainable living."

BedZed in Wallington, developed by the Peabody Trust, is the UK's largest carbon-neutral eco-community.
