The Surrey Performing Arts Library (SPAL) will relocate from Dorking to Epsom library.

The library houses thousands of musical scores and play texts was under threat due to council budget cuts.

However, supported by an active campaign the library will now relocate. Cllr Bernie Muir, who was one of the active campaigners, has welcomed the news: "I am delighted at the news that SPAL will be moving to Epsom – it’s something I’ve long called for, especially as, when consulted, over 91% of users were against closure. In fact, the move to Epsom should result in slightly extended opening hours. It’s a vital and valued cultural service and I wish them all the best."

The move was confirmed at a Cabinet meeting earlier this week and will ensure the vast collections of music and drama will be brought into the main library system at Epsom.

SPAL is one of the very few music and drama libraries remaining in the UK, and helps support the cultural life of the county by bringing together a wide range of material on all aspects of performing arts.
