A team of Epsom girls have become national football champions after a last-minute goal secured their victory in the ESFA Playstation under-14 Schools Cup Final.

The Blenheim High School team, who became Surrey champions earlier this month, got through eight rounds before making the trip to Reading’s Madjeski Stadium for the final.

Their opponents Durham Johnston School took the lead after just 30 seconds, but within minutes captain Amelie fired a shot into the top corner from 25 metres.

Two more goals – one after six minutes and a penalty after 18 minutes – meant Blenheim was behind three goals to one, before Becca grabbed a crucial goal just before half time.

Blenheim drew level through a strike from Bronte ten minutes after the break, and applied pressure throughout the match, but penalties were looming.

With just two minutes of injury time left, Becca managed to slot the ball past the Durham Johnston keeper, with Blenheim taking the lead for the first time in the game.

They were crowned national champions in front of about 50 travelling supporters.

Captain Amelie said: “It was a fantastic experience to take part in the National Cup, but to have played the final in a stadium like Reading and then to have won was even better.

“After being behind all game, the feeling after we scored the final goal was incredible. It’s a day the team will never forget."

Team coach Stuart Millard said: “After an outstanding season, I am so proud that all the girls’ hard work and dedication to girls’ football at Blenheim has paid off.

“Not only are we celebrating being national champions and Surrey Cup winners with the Under 14's but the Under 12 girls have also lifted the Surrey Cup this season too.

“Although hard work and dedication have been the recipe for success, the way that the girls approach their football is also so important. Every training session or match day is filled with focus and laughter in good measure, and it really is a dream team to be in charge of such a talented group of girls.

“The girls have built lasting friendships and that shows in the way they fight for each other on the pitch and never give up on playing good football, even if it means waiting until the last minute of a final to score.

“I am immensely proud of these girls and cannot wait to see what success lies before them in the coming years, both individually and as a team.”
