A fast food restaurant in Bexleyheath was told it needed major improvement after flies were found in the kitchen and open cans of food were left in the fridge.

Kings Flavour in Pickford Lane was rated one out of five at an food hygiene inspection in May this year.

The inspectors look at how hygienically food is handled, the condition and cleanliness of the building and how they management ensures food is safe and standards are maintained. Each area is given a rating between zero - meaning urgent improvement necessary - and five - meaning very good.

The establishment is then given an overall rating and in Kings Flavour’s case, it was given a 'one', meaning ‘major improvement’ is necessary.

During their visit, inspectors wrote that they found “Open cans of food stored in the fridge.

“Flies were present in the kitchen, potentially contaminating food and surfaces that they land on.

“Food handlers were using the same tongs for handling raw meat and cooked meat at the griddle.

“The thermometer was ‘cleaned’ prior to use with hand wipes.”

Inspectors said worn out chopping boards need to be replaced and a towel dispenser needs to be provided to be used with the hand wash basin.

The inspector said: “Food handlers were washing their hands in the sink designated for food preparation.”

Aesthetically, inspectors also told Kings Flavour to repaint the walls in the staff toilet.

Inspectors found raw meat with ready to eat food rather than being stored in a separate fridge or freezer.

A spokesperson for Kings Flavour said they are awaiting another inspection.

The spokesperson said: “We are waiting for another visit. We have been visited twice since.

“We have done what we were told and are just waiting to be given another rating. We have changed anything we needed to.”
