A young tree was brought down by a man outside Twickenham stadium during the England match at the weekend.

The man collided with the tree causing it to partly fall into Rugby Road, outside the stadium, on Sunday, May 28, after the roads had been re-opened since pre-match closures.

The Rugby Football Union’s event team acted quickly to prevent as much disruption to traffic as possible by pulling the debris onto the side and getting the stadium’s medical team to check the man for any injuries.

A spokesperson for the RFU has confirmed: “A young tree came down in Rugby Road due to a member of the public falling against it.

“The RFU will be discussing this with the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.”

Comments on the RFU Home Turf Facebook page indicate that it is not known if the man had been at the rugby match.

Further comments indicated that he was not seriously hurt and the security team took down his details to pass on to the council – along with details of the fallen tree.

A spokesperson for Richmond council have said: “We have received notification from the RFU that a young tree on Rugby Road was damaged during a rugby match.

“The tree has been removed and council officers are liaising with the RFU to ensure that a replacement is planted at an appropriate time.”
