Five schemes in Wandsworth have been shortlisted as finalists for the national Housing Design Awards (HDA).

The shortlist includes developments in Wandsworth town centre, Putney, Roehampton, Battersea and Clapham Junction.

Councillor Sarah McDermott, chairwoman of Wandsworth Council’s Planning Applications Committee, said: “We are delighted to see so many Wandsworth schemes shortlisted for the Housing Awards particularly as they offer a wide range of housing to cater for all needs.”

Pocket Living’s Mapleton Crescent development, set to be the tallest residential tower in Europe built through modular construction, has been shortlisted and involves completed flats assembled in factories before being transported to sites and installed with cranes.

Located in Wandsworth town centre, the building was designed by architects Metropolitan Workshop, and when completed will feature 36 private flats and 53 to be sold at a discount of at least 20 per cent to first time buyers, singles or couples with a total household income of around £37,000.

Peabody housing association’s redevelopment of the St John’s Hill Estate opposite Clapham Junction station is also a finalist. The Burridge Gardens scheme involves a mix of private, social rent and shared ownership housing and includes a new link through to Wandsworth Common.

The scheme, designed by architects Hawkins Brown, also involves a new community centre and public square.

Henley Halebrown architects were commissioned by the University of Roehampton to design new student homes in the grounds of the Grade II listed 18th century Georgian villa Downshire House. The shortlisted Chadwick House was completed in 2016.

Former office premises on Upper Richmond Road in Putney were transformed into 113 new flats, a new public square and more than 47,000 sq ft of office and shop space.

London Square’s development, designed by architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, incorporates a south-facing private garden for residents, along with communal roof gardens.

The redevelopment by Angle Property Ltd of a former petrol station in York Road, Battersea also made the shortlist. This project will build flats for low cost rent and for private sale, designed by architects TP Bennett.

The HDA, first established in 1948, is the longest running industry awards scheme in the UK.

Most of the shortlisted schemes are visited by judges in April and May, while the awards will be presented in early July.
