A care home looking after dementia suffers in East Molesey has been told their quality of care is inadequate by a health watchdog after residents were found in stained and dirty clothing.

A report detailing poor conditions at Malmesbury House in Beauchamp Road was published on January 7 after inspectors paid the home a visit in September 2016.

The report concluded that residents were not protected from avoidable risks nor protected from risks of infection, because standards of infection prevention and control were so poor.

The recent inspection uncovered several violations of the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

Inspectors said efforts were not made to ensure that patient dignity was maintained, with residents described as visually unkempt and not supported to maintain their personal hygiene.

Several were spotted in stained and dirty clothing.

There was also a pervasive smell of urine, together with mattresses and beddings found old and stained.

Patient care records contained inconsistent information and were not stored securely, according to inspectors.

Inspectors added that staff were said to have positive interactions with residents of the care home, although they spent periods of time together which could have been spent supporting residents.

There was also little opportunity for patients to leave the premises, and lack of activities to keep them occupied.

Despite the decision reached by inspectors, patients reported being pleased with the service they received, stating that staff were kind and friendly.

They also said that family members were able to visit at any time, and that family members could have privacy whenever they wanted it.

The service has been placed under special measures by the CQC in order to ensure that the level of care improves significantly.

The situation will be kept under review, and could escalate to urgent enforcement action being imposed. The premises will be visited again within six months.

CQC inspectors will remain in close contact with the care home, ensuring that improvements are being made in due course.

Managers at Malmesbury House refused to comment on the results of the report.
