A disabled dog whose legs were so deformed that he could barely get around has learned to walk again.

Mickey, a two-year old German shorthaired pointer, was born with severely bowed legs and had adapted to walking with his elbows almost on the floor.

Mickey was originally a street dog in Turkey and was rescued by his former owners, who sadly could no longer look after him and brought him to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Battersea’s vets were worried he was set for a life of pain and discomfort but after multiple surgeries and months of recovery, Mickey can now walk.

His amazing story will revealed on ITV’s Paul O'Grady: For the Love of Dogs at Christmas.

Battersea Ambassador Paul O’Grady described how he had never seen a case as severe as Mickey’s.

He said: “My heart broke watching him when I first saw him hobbling around.

“Yet, despite his bowed legs, Mickey is such a bright and affectionate boy.

“I could tell from the beginning that he was special and knew we had to do everything we could to get him straightened out.”

Ryk Botes, a veterinary surgeon at Medivet said they “jumped at the chance” to help Mickey.

He said: “Mickey’s procedure was very complicated and it took three surgeries to put him right.

“But it was worth it in the end when the bandages came off and we could see him walk on his new legs for the first time.”

Paul O’Grady added: “When you see Mickey today you’d never guess how much he’s been through.

“It’s an absolute delight to watch him playing and bounding around with his doggy friends. He’s a super boy and it’s wonderful to see him finally standing tall.”

For the Love of Dogs is on Christmas Day on ITV at 6:45pm.
