Police have confirmed there has been at least seven deaths after a tram derailed and was oveturned in Croydon this morning.

More than 50 people were injured when the crowded two-carriage tram tipped onto its side near Sandilands tram stop, Addiscombe Road, at about 6.10am.

The driver of the tram has been arrested and remains in police custody, British Transport Police confirmed this afternoon.

Robin Smith, assistant chief constable of British Transport Police, said: "A number of people have been taken to hospital with injuries and sadly it looks as though there has been some loss of life.

"It is too early for us to confirm numbers but we are working hard to assess the ongoing incident and we are continuing to focus on recovery efforts."

It has since been confirmed at least five people have died following the incident this morning.

A woman who lives nearby, who asked not to be named, said: "A police officer told me six people were dead and two people were still trapped.

"I heard a lot of noise and saw flashing lights at about 6am this morning."

Our reporter Sean Morrison was on the scene, and described what he could see. 

He said: "Everything has come to a complete standstill. 

"There's police everwhere. The road is taped off for about half a mile. Lots of people are congregated in the street."

Earlier, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said 70 firefighters are currently at the scene and are expected to remain there for several hours. 

LFB Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Jane Philpott, was in Croydon and said: "Firefighters have released a number of people and two people remain trapped. 

"All the emergency services are working closely together to help those involved in this incident."

Conservative London Assembly Member for Croydon and Sutton, Steve O'Connell, said: "This is an awful scene in Croydon and my thoughts are with all of those who have been injured and those still trapped.

"I know the emergency services will be working hard at the scene and I'd ask everyone in the area to rally round and support them in any way they can this morning."

Members of the public are being warned to avoid the area.
