A woman and child have been taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation after a fire destroyed a flat in Earlsfield last night.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) were called at 6.18pm last night (June 20) to the two floor block of flats in Godley Road, where a fire had broken out in the first floor flat.

One woman had managed to run out of the flats before the LFB arrived, and declined medical attention.

Another woman and a girl also managed to escape the flats, and were treated for smoke inhalation before being taken to hospital.

A spokeswoman for the LFB said the first floor flat was "100 per cent damaged by fire", along with around 20 per cent of the communal roof.

Watch Manager Mick Gomm from Battersea fire station who was at the scene said: "Our crews worked really hard  to stop the fire from spreading to the roofs either side of the mid terraced maisonette where the fire had started.

"We also put in place salvage operations at an early stage to protect the properties below and either side from water damage."

Crews from Battersea, Tooting, Wimbledon, Norbury, West Norwood and Lambeth fire stations attended the incident. An aerial ladder platform was also used as an observation platform.

Luke Wretham, 27, who lives near to Godley Road, saw the aftermath at the scene at approximately 10.40pm.

He said: "It seemed to be under control.

"The power companies were there and there were still five fire engines but no ambulances on the scene.

"I did notice when I turned the tap on this morning that it spluttered quite a bit, I don't know if that was affected by it."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
