This is the dramatic moment a torrent of water washed out a road in Coulsdon.

Torrential rain wreaked havok in south London yesterday causing flash flooding in Coulsdon and Purley.

Caterham Drive at the junction of Keston Avenue in Coulsdon was blocked due to flooding.

Witness Steve Hann captured the tide of water gushing down the road, smashing into cars along the way.

Surface water also caused delays in Purley Road at Purley Cross and Brighton Road in Purley, while Chaldon Way was blocked at the juntion of Mead Way in Coulsdon due to flooding. 

The downpour flooded a bowling green on Marlpit Lane in Coulsdon and surrounding roads.

The Environment Agency said 1.4 inches (3.5cm) of rain fell in London in one hour.

London Fire Brigade said it had been called to more than 200 flooding-related 999 calls yesterday afternoon and had had than three times as many emergency calls than was typical.
