He told the Wimbledon Guardian: "When I got to the scene of the collision there was some ambulances and police cars and a bus at an angle half in the bus lane, half out.
"I would normally have cycled past but I know several people that use that route on their journey so stopped to see if it was one of them."
He said he also thought the person involved in the crash was a woman.
A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 7.07am to London Road, Mitcham, to reports of a road traffic collision.
"We sent a paramedic in a car, an ambulance crew and an incident response officer to the scene.
"Sadly a person died at the scene."
