Elmbridge’s MPs are set to vote for airstrikes in Syria in the House of Commons later today.

Esher and Walton MP Dominic Raab and Foreign Secretary and Weybridge MP Philip Hammond are both supporting the Government’s plans to begin targeted airstrikes in Syria, where terrorist organisation Isis have control of large parts of the country.

Conservative MPs are largely behind the Prime Minister with the majority reportedly set to vote yes.

Mr Hammond said: “As the Prime Minister set out in his statement to Parliament last week, we believe there is a strong case for extending our military action to tackle the threat from ISIL in Syria.

“Our reason for action is the very direct threat that ISIL poses to our country and to our way of life and when it comes to our military contribution this is about helping and supporting our allies and other countries from the air.

“It is not about British boots on the ground. ISIL have carried out attacks in Turkey, Lebanon and, of course, most recently in Paris.

“ISIL have also claimed responsibility for bringing down the Russian plane in Sinai, killing two hundred and twenty four people on board. Britain is a key member of the international coalition against ISIL.

“We must act to degrade ISIL and reduce their capability to attack us. We must also win the generational struggle to defeat the twisted ideology of Islamist extremism.”

Mr Raab added his support, saying: “I support British airstrikes, in self-defence with our allies, against Islamic State.

“Of course it's a difficult issue, but we're not going to be sucked into the kind of open-ended intervention we saw in Iraq.

“Ultimately, I don't see how we can watch as such a vicious and fanatical terrorist group establish itself in Syria, and then stand back as it uses its foothold there as a base to directly threaten the UK and other countries.”

A free vote will be held in the Commons later today after a series of terrorist attacks throughout November saw hundreds of people killed in Paris, Beirut, Lebanon, Kenya and Nigeria.
