A champion female boxer will take over a club in a bid to encourage more women into the sport.

Rachel Bower, a Met police detective by day, was recently crowned national Elite Champion Female Boxer at 54kg and wants to encourage other women into the sport.

The championships, held in Liverpool in April, was the first time women’s bouts had been held alongside men.

She will take a boxing class at the Wimbledon Kickboxing and Boxing Club on Monday, June 22, teaching essential skills such as defence and foot work.

Mrs Bower said: "It will be a good way to show women what the club has to offer.

"I’ll teach people how to get out of the way of a punch.

"It’s something I used to struggle with."

Didi Ferguson, an instructor and joint owner of the Wimbledon Kickboxing and Boxing Club, said: "It will be something a bit different and a bit fresh.

"I hope Rachel will inspire women to get into the sport.

"We want as many women as possible to come along for the class."

Mrs Bower boxes for the famous Fitzroy Lodge ABC in Lambeth and lives in Wimbledon.

She will host a one-off boxing class at the Wimbledon Park Pavilion on Monday, June 22 from 7pm to 8pm. Classes cost £7.50 for club members. The first class for non-members is free.
