A keen shutterbug who is trying to photograph 1,000 London streets has won the first prize draw for the council’s Love Your Street campaign.

Morden resident Mike Roberts, who has had two strokes and been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, is aiming to raise £1,000 for the Stroke Association with the photograph project and has already reached £750.

Many of Mr Roberts’ pictures were taken in Merton and he will be donating the collection to the council’s heritage service.

He said: "I think it’s really important that people take pride in where they live and I am pleased that the council is working with residents and the community to keep the borough clean through the Love Your Street campaign."

Mr Roberts, who won a £100 gift voucher for his efforts, added: "I’m delighted to be the first winner of the Love Your Street prize draw and would encourage other residents to take the pledge."

Merton Council’s director for environment and regeneration Chris Lee said: "We know that many residents work hard to keep their neighbourhood clean and the Love Your Street campaign is about recognising that commitment, taking a stand against litter and showing pride in our local area."

The Love Your Street campaign marks the council’s new approach in its ongoing fight against people littering and fly-tipping by boosting the positive work it does with residents, businesses, community groups and schools across the borough.
