A charity is urgently appealing for money and homes so it can bring children growing up near Chernobyl to the UK for respite from radiation.

For the past 13 years Mid-Surrey Link of Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline has brought a group of children from areas in Russia or Ukraine affected by the nuclear reactor meltdown to Britain for a holiday.

But this year it is so short of funds and families to may not be able to do this.

Link’s publicity coordinator Kathy Orme said: "These poor children are desperate to come to Mid Surrey for a holiday.

"We really do need help this year. Funds are very low and without donations coming in, we are unable to run a visit."

As part of the scheme, local families volunteer to host the children for either a fortnight or the entire holiday.

Host families are also needed for four weeks in July. A full timetable has already been planned for the youngsters during their stay.

The respite it brings from their surroundings, which will be affected by radiation for thousands of years to come, bring visible health health benefits.

"In just two weeks you can see that the children are healthier and their skin improves," said Ms Orme.

"Any amount of donation would be gratefully received, or if you are about to undertake an event to raise money for charity please consider ours."
