I read that the new Labour Council is implementing something called a play streets initiative – a scheme ostensibly designed to encourage more children to play out in the street (Play plan approved, July 2).

On first learning this my reaction was quite positive. I enjoyed playing outside as a kid and anything that gets young people away from the TV screen should be welcomed.
But on reflection it strikes me as being rather ludicrous that this should fall anywhere near the remit of a council. Children should be able to play wherever and whenever they like within parental guidelines.

The policy of the council is that a “marshal” will be funded to supervise the children and also to stop cars from driving down the road.

Surely motorists are entitled to drive on any custom-built road. We certainly pay enough road tax and fuel duty for the privilege.

Tens of thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money will be spent on council staff supposedly supervising children’s playtime.

What happens if no children want to play in the slot the council has allocated. Will playtime be cancelled or will children be encouraged to play against their will, to achieve some nostalgic ideal?
