Schoolchildren have raised over £3,000 by doing a sponsored walked in memory of a little boy who died from meningitis.

Following Hugo Wong’s death in April aged just 20 months, the parents of children at his brother’s school organised the one-mile walk in Nonsuch Park on Sunday.

The walk by children of Meadow Primary School, in Sparrow Farm Road, Epsom, was in aid of charity Meningitis Now.

More than £400 was collected in buckets on the day and the online fundraising total has exceeded £3,000.

Hugo’s mother Eva said they were overwhelmed by the support from friends and family, his nursery and their other son Jasper's school community.

She said: "This event has brought me closer to the school mums and nursery and made me feel that lots of parents do care and want to raise awareness about the sudden devastation that meningitis can cause.

"The fundraising activities have brought some comfort for our loss of Hugo.

"It is helping us to keep Hugo's memory alive and to make us all proud that in Hugo's name, good work is coming out of our tragedy."

Emma Parris, who has twins at the school, said: "My daughter Olivia is in Hugo's brother's class and both my children understand that Hugo passed away and is up on the stars.

"They understand we are walking to raise money to help make medicines to stop other children getting sick and passing away.

"I think this is a wonderful idea for the children and parents to come together and do something in Hugo's memory."
