A new free school has has won the seal of approval from education inspectors just over a year after opening its classrooms for the first time.

The Bolingbroke Academy free school in Battersea, which opened in September 2012, has been endorsed by Ofsted as a "good school".

The Bolingbroke was the borough's frist free school and is operated by ARK which runs 27 academies across the country.

Ofsted's report said the school was providing its students with "a springboard to a successful future."

Claire Edis the school’s principal, was singled out for praise with the report stating: "The Principal has established a clear vision, ethos and culture for the academy.

"This has allowed the academy to develop a very strong and consistent message of ambition and excellence throughout its community. This has in turn developed very strong foundations for the future."

In response Ms Edis said: "Our school has high aspirations for every child – to give them the knowledge and ambition to be able to go to university or the career of their choice.

"Pupils and staff have worked incredibly hard over the past few months, so it is fantastic to get this endorsement from Ofsted."

The council’s education spokesman Councillor Kathy Tracey said: "This is great news for the Bolingbroke which has enjoyed a very successful first year."
