An arsonist went on a rampage setting fire to bins in New Malden last night.

Six bins were set alight and firefighters from both New Malden and Surbiton were involved in putting out the small fires.

The first bin was set fire to in Westbury Avenue at 10:50pm and another in Rodney Road was reported just before 11.10pm.

Minutes later firefighters rushed to Cavendish Road where two bins were set on fire alongside a pile of rubbish, followed by a household bin in Burlington Road just before 11.25pm.

Steve Preston, from New Malden’s blue watch manager, said: “The first fire in Westbury Avenue was by the Holy Cross grounds – where they put their bins out. All the fires were hazardous."

Mr Preston called for people to be vigilant when putting rubbish out and suggested only putting rubbish out on collection days.

He said: “When rubbish is left out there are people who take this as an opportunity.”
