Schools in Epsom are rallying round to help the Filipino victims of one of the world's biggest typhoons.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Rosebank, West Street, has been collecting donations this week to assist disaster relief in the Philippines.

Parent Alice Weston said a quarter of her son’s class are Filipino and everyone really wants to help people devastated by the typhoon, which has left more than 4,000 dead.

She said: "I feel we should show our support and let the wider community in Epsom know that we are a town with strong links to the Philippines."

Blenheim High School, in Longmead Road, appealed for dried and tinned food to be brought in and within three days a huge pile of food had been collected.

Tracey Fantham said: "This appeal touched everyone at Blenheim; a member of our catering staff is from the Philippines and when she asked for help, the whole school got involved.

"We were anxious to help in any worthwhile way we could."
