One sprinter has stood above all others this year, winning almost everything there is to win - and it is not Usain Bolt, but his over-50 equivalent Pat Logan.

Mr Logan, who is from Epsom and trains at the David Weir Arena in Carshalton, is officially the fastest over-50 runner in the world having won the 100m title at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Brazil last month.

The evergreen 53-year-old ran the 100m in 11.79s to top off a season in which he also claimed the British 100m and 200m titles and the 60m European title.

Mr Logan, a married father-of-two, puts his success down to a low carb 'caveman style' diet, regular training through the Everyone Active-run David Weir Arena in Middleton Road and the fact that he, unlike other athletes, has not slowed down over the years.

The IT manager said: "I started sprinting late, I was in my mid 20s. For a while I did marathons, part of the marathon scene in the 80s, but then I realised it wasn't for me.

"At first I was just a club standard runner but sprinters usually lose about a second every decade and that hasn't happened to me.

"It happens to almost everyone, so Usain Bolt will probably be a second slower in 10 years time, but there are a who don't slow down and I'm one of them.

"I have always trained well but now it's more about quality rather than quantity with short bursts of heavy weights and things like that. Apparently it's more suited to older people and there is some science behind it. I just know it works for me.

"I'm a bit of a nutrition freak= and I get a lot of sleep and that helps. I eat a paleo-diet that's high in protein and low in carbs. It's like a caveman diet."

Mr Logan's athletic exploits take him all over the world, with a trip to Sacramento last year and Brazil this year.

"Now he is training for next year's European and World Championships in Hungary and Turkey respectively.

He added: "It was a great season for me and I have no doubt that training at the David Weir Leisure Centre was integral to my success.

"Next season is going to be tough as I’ll be one of the oldest in my age category, but I’m extremely hopeful that I will continue my good form in 2014."
