Residents have planted more than 5,000 wild flowers in Merton Park with the help of a lottery grant.

Thousands of English bluebells, wild daffodils and tulips were planted on November 17 along the Merton Park Green Walks, which runs between Merton Park tram station and Morden Road, as part of the plan to attract more wild life to the area and to create a haven for the dwindling bee population.

The project was made possible by a £3,900 grant from the Lottery Fund to the Willmore End Residents Association (WERA).

A spokesman for WERA said: "A number of trees including several ‘Merton’ varieties, and a wide range of wildflower seeds and bulbs, have already been planted in the last couple of years.

"During the next few weeks a 50m long hedge of native tree species will also be planted between the tram line and the end of Melbourne Road."
