A charity supporting people with learning disabilities in Elmbridge wants their thoughts on a range of subjects.

Elmbridge Community Link wants to contact every adult with a learning disability in the borough and find out what they do in the day and evening.

The charity believes there are about 2,500 adults with learning disabilities living in the borough but Surrey County Council supports only 3,375 across the whole county.

In Surrey, 20,463 adults, 2.35 per cent of the adult population, have a learning disability, with 16.5 per cent supported by the county council.

Elmbridge Community Link supports people with learning disabilities with a range of activities and allows them to learn new skills or improve existing ones in a friendly and supportive environment.

Terri Collins, chairman of Elmbridge Community Link’s board of trustees, said: “We want to find the missing people in Elmbridge and find out what they are doing. It may be that they are working and living full and happy lives, but our fear is that they are stuck at home, leaving them feeling isolated, lonely and cut off from their communities.

“People with learning disabilities are very misunderstood and it is easy for them to become forgotten and marginalised.”

The charity is asking people to complete a survey with the help of a family member or carer to help them reach and support more adults. The survey will be available online until Saturday, November 30, at surveymonkey.com/s/ECLSURVEY.
