A headteacher has promised to turn her new school into an outstanding one within a year of being rated inadequate by Ofsted.

Emma Kelty had not yet taken over at Knollmead Primary School when inspectors visited in July this year.

The report published last week placed her new school in a category of concern, detailing several “serious weaknesses” including poor pupil progress and an inconsistent quality of teaching.

But Ms Kelty said she was confident the school would turn around its fortunes within a year – and could receive an outstanding grade from Ofsted inspectors when they next visit.

Ms Kelty said: “I know that we will rise to be outstanding within the year due to the wonderful and unfaltering dedication of the staff here at Knollmead.

“I am very proud to join Knollmead Primary School at this exciting time and we intend to build on the sterling work already undertaken in order to propel Knollmead into an inspirational hub where learning boundaries are challenged everyday by everyone.

“I, the staff and friends of Knollmead are steadfast in wanting only the best for the children and together we will achieve our aspirations.”

In line with current Government policy, Knollmead will now receive help from one of the borough’s outstanding academies – believed to be the Coombe Schools Federation.

Ms Kelty added: “With our new rapid school development plan, support from the local authority and outstanding schools in the borough, the committed staff and families of Knollmead are confident that this school will demonstrate outstanding practice within the year.”

Ms Kelty was backed by Knollmead chair of governors Diana Brotherston, who said: “I am confident that the school is well placed to make rapid progress under the strong leadership of our new headteacher.”

Councillor David Ryder-Mills, lead member for schools, added: “The council will submit its plans to address the identified weaknesses at Knollmead to Ofsted very soon.

"We are supporting the new headteacher, who is already making rapid improvements, in any way we can.”
