A mother has appeared in court accused of being part of a drugs ring trying to smuggle £400,000 worth of cocaine into the country.

Sharon Dixon of Lyndhurst Court in Whitehorse Lane, South Norwood, appeared at South Western Magistrates Court yesterday charged with conspiracy to import cocaine.

The 51-year-old is accused of working alongside Glenroy Williams, 50, of Arodene Road, Brixton, and Derek Giles 56, of Melbourne Court, Anerley Road, Anerley, to import the drugs.

The court heard Miss Dixon allegedly travelled to Jamaica in August where she picked up the drugs.

The drugs were said to be hidden in four tins of dried callaloo, a popular Caribbean leaf vegetable dish, before Miss Dixon returned to London where she caught a connecting flight to Portugal.

It is also alleged Mr Giles, who works as a baggage handler at Gatwick Airport, removed the drugs while Miss Dixon's bags were in transfer to ensure she was not caught with them when she returned to London a day later.

Magistrates were told police had been watching Mr Williams who is alleged to have organised the importation, and had bugged his car.

Mr Williams appeared at South Western Magistrates on Saturday charged with conspiracy to import cocaine and possession of a stun gun.

Mr Giles appeared at the same court on the same day charged with conspiracy to import cocaine.

All three were remanded in custody to appear at Kingston Crown Court on October 4.
