A good dressing gown has deep pockets, and plenty of them, according to the man who has played Arthur Dent for 35 years.

Simon Jones, star of Douglas Adams’ beloved radio and TV series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, has donned his dressing gown once again for an innovative new show.

But the iconic garment, which Dent was still wearing when he escaped Earth just before it was demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass, has seen some improvements over the years.

Jones says: “I don’t wear the original very often. I still have it. The ones I’m taking on tour are very similar in design, but much lighter.

“I’m not a great fan of the original dressing gown because it was made of that horrible material that dressing gowns were made of.”

A more recent, personal, loungewear acquisition was a striking number from Singapore, with a dragon design on the back, Jones says.

Hitchhiker’s at the Rose Theatre will be a radio show like no other – with a live band, sound effects and high-definition projections.

The story, which has tickled ribs since 1978, still appeals to people of all ages, Jones says.

Even youngsters who have never experienced Arthur Dent’s adventure will find something to enjoy.

Jones adds: “It’s quite clear that all generations have been sort of inculcated with the lore and tradition of Hitchhiker’s.

“It is interesting that whole families have come to see it. We have built up three generations, pretty well.

“We have a lot of kids there screaming with laughter. They do seem to love it. It is a real stage event.

“It is also funny if you don’t know [the story].”

Jones will take to the stage with other original cast members, and Anita Dobson as the Voice of The Book.
