Pollution in Putney High Street has dropped this year but is still exceeding current EU limits.
Over the last 12 months old diesel buses which run along Putney High Street have been gradually replaced with new, more eco-friendly models, which have contributed to a 11.8 per cent drop in pollution levels.
Recording of the level of pollution on Putney High Street started in 2009, when an air quality monitoring station was installed, and this year’s results have been the lowest so far.
Councillor Jonathan Cook, Wandsworth Council's spokesman for the environment, said: "The raw data looks promising and our hope is that the cleaner bus campaign is behind a genuine and sustainable fall in nitrogen dioxide levels.
"However we can't afford to be complacent and there is a long way to go. There will need to be improvements across the board if we're to bring pollution levels down to an acceptable level."
