I am writing in response to Bonnie Craven’s letter referring to a letter from Sutton Council addressed to “Dear Council Tax Payer”.

I do not support any proposal to downgrade St Helier hospital and I have worked with Sutton Council and elected representatives from across South London to make this clear at every possible opportunity and via every means of communication.

I have collected more than 12,000 signatures against these dangerous proposals and I know that many other community groups and elected representatives have collected similar numbers.

These are not a ‘few signatures’ as Ms Craven suggests but the support for our local hospital from tens of thousands of local residents.

Circulating literature, raising awareness and collecting signatures is an important part of the campaign to save our local hospital.

Ms Craven asks why we don’t follow the example of Lewisham Hospital. The two situations are quite different and a Judicial Review is certainly something to be considered for the future.

However, no decisions have yet been made so a Judicial Review is not possible at this time.

The Better Service Better Value proposals are flawed, based upon false assumptions and incorrect data – I will continue to make this case forcefully at every available opportunity and it is my hope the BSBV plans will be abandoned.

More importantly I will work tirelessly to ensure that the people of Carshalton and Wallington are heard on this crucial issue.
