Proposals to turn a dirt track on Mitcham Common into a three metre wide cycling lane have been put forward by Merton Council.
The existing track, which runs along Croydon Road on Mitcham Common, would be resurfaced and turned into a lit cycle lane should the plan gain approval.
Sandra Vogel, a resident of Mitcham and a cyclist, said: "I’m not sure that I approve of quite a long slice of the common being turned into a lit 3m wide cycleway.
"I understand that the current provision for cyclists is not good.
"My preferred way of dealing with that would be to do something in Croydon Road itself.
"There is room in Croydon Road to provide a better cycleway on the road and it would be possible to reduce traffic speed along there."
The proposal was discussed at a recent meeting of the Mitcham Common Conservators but is still in the early stages according to Merton’s cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration, Councillor Andrew Judge.
He said: "Merton is looking at encouraging cycling and improving facilities for cyclists throughout the borough. This, for example, includes cycle parking and cycle lanes.
"We have a number of cycle proposals being drawn up including a concept of introducing a cycle lane along the dirt track that is currently used by some cyclists along Mitcham Common.
"These are very early days and we are continuing to work with the Mitcham Common Conservators to come up with suitable proposals."
