There were 1,320 premature deaths in Sutton between 2009 and 2011, a Government report has found.

Sutton has been ranked as 28th out of 150 local authorities in England when it comes to deaths caused by the top five preventable killers – heart disease, stroke, cancer, lung disease and liver disease.

In the report, by Public Health England, neighbouring Croydon did not do as well coming in at 58 and Wandsworth did even worse being ranked at 60.

The London Borough of Merton was not far behind Sutton coming in at 29th and Kingston was near the top of the table coming at 11th place.

The areas Sutton did the worst in were cancer deaths and lung disease coming in at 51st place in both categories.

BMI Healthcare, a private hospital group, has launched a campaign to raise awareness around these top five killers and is encouraging people to make a pledge to improve their health.
