A South Norwood man has appeared in court charged with causing the death of a policeman in a hit and run on Friday.

Gary Bromige, of Holland Road, who was referred to in court as Gary Cody, spoke only to confirm his name, when he appeared at South Western Magistrates Court this morning.

The 25-year-old is charged with causing death by dangerous driving; failing to stop at the scene of an accident; failing to report an accident; and driving without insurance.

PC Andrew Duncan, a Merton traffic police officer who lived in East Molesey, died in hospital yesterday after he was run over in Reigate Avenue, Sutton, near Rosehill roundabout, in the early hours of September 20.

The 47-year-old, who was known as Andy was married with two children - a son and a daughter.

Mr Taylor, prosecuting told the court PC Duncan had been carrying out speed checks on the dual carriageway.

He said: "On Friday at approximately 12.48am PC Duncan attempted to stop a speeding black Volkswagen Golf which at the time was being driven by Mr Cody.

He added : "He drove into the officer, who was catapulted and thrown 35 metres."

The court heard Mr Cody, allegedly had three passengers in the car at the time of the collision.

Mr Taylor said the car, which was found five hours later, suffered substanial damage to the front and had a broken windscreen.

Mr Cody who wore a grey jumper and white trousers was remanded in custody to appear before Kingston Crown Court on October 7.

Two men were arrested on Sunday evening in connection with the investigation. They are currently in custody at a south London police station.

On Saturday, a woman was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. She has since been bailed until a date in October.
