Three illegal workers have been arrested in a raid on an Indian restaurant in Epsom.

Home Office immigration enforcement officers raided Blue Mint Indian restaurant in Waterloo Road at noon on Friday.

Blue Mint now faces a potential £30,000 fine if unable to prove correct right-to-work checks were performed.

A Bangladeshi man, 33, and an Indian man, 29, were arrested for overstaying their visas and Bangladeshi man, 28, was arrested for entering the country illegally.

The Bangladeshi men have been transferred to immigration detention pending removal and the Indian man was placed on immigration bail while his case is progressed.

He also faces removal if found to have no leave to remain.

At 2.15pm officers went on to raid La Orient restaurant in Esher High Street and arrested three Chinese nationals there.

Paul Smith, from the Thames Valley and Surrey Home Office Immigration Enforcement team, said: "Illegal working is not a victimless crime.

"It defrauds the taxpayer, undercuts honest employers and cheats legitimate job seekers out of employment opportunities.

"We are sending a clear message to employers in Surrey who choose to use illegal labour: we will find you and you will pay a heavy penalty.

"We will not allow the growth of a shadow economy for illegal migrants.

"We are happy to work with businesses to let them know what checks need to be made on staff, but those who break the law should know that they will face financial penalties."
