An Esher primary school has been awarded £1,500 for finishing second in a UK-wide gardening campaign.

Milbourne Lodge grows its own fruit and vegetables and shares them with staff and pupils.

Earlier this year, Pippa Greenwood, plant pathologist, visited the school and was impressed with the children’s attitudes and enthusiasm toward gardening.

The prize money, awarded as part of the Stewart Garden Schools Campaign, will be spent at Garsons Esher.

Winning schools will also be provided with seed trays, plant pots, troughs and watering cans by Stewart Garden.

The campaign, now in its second year, aims to get children across the country interested and involved in growing their own fruit and vegetables.

Richard Butler, CEO at Stewart Garden, said: “We’re delighted that Stewart Garden Schools has proved so popular. Clearly, grow your own has captured the imagination of young minds across the country.”

Next year, ten schools will be awarded cash prizes of up to £1,000.
