Epsom’s flagship shopping centre will have no empty retail units now that an upmarket shoe shop has announced it will be opening in the town.

A spokeswoman for The Ashley Centre said Jones Bootmaker has just signed the lease on the shopping mall’s final empty retail unit, meaning that the centre is now fully let.

It is unusual for a shopping centre to be completely full and is a sign of confidence by retailers in both the Ashley Centre and in Epsom as a shopping destination.

David Beddows, the centre’s general manager, said: "In these tough economic times things are very difficult for retailers and we want to support them in any way we can.

"During the last 12 months we have been delighted to welcome new stores Muffin Break, Hotter Shoes and Pandora as well as our newest shop Jones Bootmaker, ensuring a good mix of retailers for our discerning shoppers.

"It is vital for the strength and prosperity of the town that our community shopping centre offers a good mix of shops and services and we are delighted that every available unit is now filled."

Epsom Town councillor Neil Dallen also welcomed the "fantastic news".

He added: "The Ashley Centre is the main centre for Epsom and Ewell and we want it to thrive and it will encourage other retailers to come into the other empty units around the town."

Jones Bootmaker specialises in boots, shoes and bags and the business dates back over 150 years.
