Going to the gym is something many people dread, but a new facility in Long Ditton adds excitement to the thought of exercising.

A new outdoor gym has been installed at Long Ditton recreation ground by Elmbridge Council thanks to 2012 legacy projects.

The outdoor gym features cross trainers, treadmills, exercise bikes and stretch stations so users can have a complete workout in the great outdoors rather that in a sweaty gym.

The facilities, which can be used by people of all ages and abilities, complement the existing tennis courts, table tennis, football and cricket pitches already at the site.

Councillor Jan Fuller, portfolio holder for leisure and cultural services, said: “In Elmbridge, we recognise the value of providing free outdoor facilities to the community to encourage people to get fit and lead an active and healthy lifestyle.

“Exercising outdoors is much more fun than slogging away on a traditional treadmill. So come along and try the equipment. You never know, you might get hooked on exercising outdoors.”

The outdoor gym will be officially opened by deputy mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Barry Fairbank, on Monday, September 9, at 10.20am and residents are invited to attend a taster session from 10am to 11am where they can learn how to use the equipment safely.
