One of the borough's MPs had to tell workmen to stop building on the roof of his office after realising they were breaking health and safety regulations.

Members of the public tweeted Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow after a picture showing workers on the roof of his office in Cheam not wearing helmets or protective boots surfaced.

Although Mr Burstow rents the office on the ground floor of the Gander Green Lane office and has no responsibility for the upper levels of the building, his staff ordered the workers to stop and get off the roof yesterday amid fears they could be in danger.

A spokesman for Mr Burstow said: "Such flagrant disregard for health and safety is shocking.

"Whilst the works are the responsibility of Paul's landlord, as a tenant he is very concerned that such shoddy work occurred and at the risk to his staff and the public.

"We have taken the details of the foreman and told him to stop work immediately and make the site safe. We have told the landlord to put things right.

"Paul is grateful to people who informed us that this was happening."
