Crystal Palace co-chairman Steve Browett said the club’s transfer deadline day dealings prove it has an eye on the future, not just the present.

Of the five new arrivals from Monday only Cameron Jerome was a loan deal, while nine of the 16 players brought in since the end of last season are on contracts longer than one year.

Browett also revealed that, from the outset of deadline day, the Eagles had a plan and it was completed with the signing of Adlene Guedioura on Tuesday.

He said: “In a squad of 25 players, the idea is to have two players for each position on the pitch, and three keepers.

“You cannot have a 20-year-old [Ross Fitzsimmons] on the bench, if he came on it would be too much pressure, so we brought in Neil Alexander.

“Technically Jose Campana and Jonny Williams are not in that squad of 25 as they are under 21 – so in effective we have a first team squad of 27 players.”

He added: “We’re pleased to have filled all the gaps, but moreover, although there are a few one-year deals, most are for three or four years.

“These are players who have real Premier League quality, but even if we were to be relegated, the players are not on such crazy wages that we’d have to get rid of them.”

From a list of targets, there were names that slipped through the net including Australian Mark Milligan and Nicklas Bendtner.

However, the biggest miss was the possible return of fans’ favourite Andy Johnson.

Browett said: “Andy is such a good guy, he is loved by the fans and he was a target but it did not happen and we wish him all the best at QPR.”

He added: “Transfer deadline is a bit like a game of cat and mouse, you have a big list of targets and you get some of them, but you don’t expect to get all of them.

“However, we’re satisfied we have dealt well to plan for now and for the future.”
