After two months of frustrating delays, roadworks on one of the areas main roads are due to end tonight.

Since July 4 there have been roadworks on College Road as a new water main is installed at Epsom College.

Residents and commuters using the road have faced delays of up to 15 minutes in each direction.

The works is not due to end until October 31 but Sutton and East Surrey Water confirmed today that from 6pm tonight the road will be cleared and the lights removed.

The rest of the work will take place in the college grounds.

The roadworks have caused considerable frustration with one resident, who wished to remain anonymous, contacting the Epsom Guardian last week to complain.

Your Local Guardian:

She said: "No one who is doing it has even apologised. The school couldn't care less about inconveniencing the local residents.

"We just want an apology and a genuine explanation as to why they won't go through the school and not along the road. The residents are not happy."

The work, that involves laying down 790 metres of pipe, is being carried out by construction company Clancy Docwra and is to convert the water supply at the college from Thames Water to Sutton and East Surrey Water.

Half of the college was already receiving water from Sutton and East Surrey Water.

A spokesman for the water company said: "We sent a letter to all the residents in June, advising them that the work would start.

"We have had complaints about the phasing of the traffic lights, and about excess soil but we have since rectified these issues.

"All companies, whether is it electricity, gas or water, use the public highway. This is why we used the road.

"It's a commercial arrangement. We sometimes carry out work at the weekend or night time to reduce congestion but a road like College Road wouldn't warrant it.

"It's routine work. The company expresses sincere apologies to any residents who did not live in the area we sent letters to who felt they were effected by the works."
