Future Taekwondo Club coach Lewis Houston overcame a back injury to win silver at the 10th TAGB Taekwondo World Championships in Coventry.
Houston who runs the Sutton-based club, fell short of gold last week in the black belt lightweight U74kg category by a single point.
He said: "I took over the club in Sutton in February and I have seen the students improve consistently week after week.
"I'm pretty strict and have high expectations of my students, so I felt this tournament would be a great opportunity for me to lead by example.
"Injuring my back weeks before the tournament meant that I was unable to train properly and I even struggled to make my weight.
"But I was determined to bring back a medal even though I wasn't 100 per cent fit."
He added: "I hope that when the next world championships come round I will be able to take some of my students and bring back a collection of medals."
