Fourteen babies born yesterday at Tooting's St George's Hospital will share the same birth date as the future King.

Baby Cambridge, as he is currently known, was born at 4.24pm on July 22 at St Mary's Hospital, weighing in at a 8lbs 6oz.

But nine girls and five boys popped out yesterday with the nearest to the Royal birth being born at 3.46pm.

In a statement, the Royal couple said: "We would like to thank the staff at the Lindo Wing and the whole hospital for the tremendous care the three of us have received.

"We know it has been a very busy period for the hospital and we would like to thank everyone - staff, patients and visitors - for their understanding during this time."

There has been no word yet on what the couple plan to name the prince.

A Kensington Palace spokesman confirmed that "mother, son and father are all doing well" and it is understood the family will leave hospital this evening or tomorrow morning.

The birth of the third in line to the throne will be marked later with a series of gun salutes.

The Royal Mint has announced that it is to commemorate the Royal birth by offering those families, whose baby was born on July 22, a silver penny struck with the year of their birth.

Parents have 60 days following the birth to obtain one of the 2,013 coins that are to be made available.
