Residents will be able to send a personal message to the royal baby and his parents after Merton Council opened a book of congratulations in his honour.

As the world waits for its first glimpse of the royal baby, the mayor of Merton is calling on residents to send their best wishes to the royal baby by inviting residents to sign a book of congratulations.

The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a son, and heir to the throne, at 4.24pm yesterday afternoon.

Councillor Krystal Miller, the mayor of Merton, said: "The birth of the boy is a fantastic moment for the country to celebrate, but more importantly a special and exciting time for the royal couple.

"We want to give our residents the opportunity to join in this wonderful moment in history and send their congratulations to welcome the Duke and Duchess’s son into the world."

The book will be available for residents to sign for one week, after which it will be sent to the Duke and Duchess along with a card from the Mayor of Merton.

The council will also be flying the Union Flag at full mast along with many other town halls across the UK.
