Sutton police have been rewarded for hitting criminals where it hurts - in their pockets.

The amount of seizures made under the Proceeds of Crime Act have gone up by 400 per cent in Sutton over the last year.

Most of the seizures are in relation to drugs offences, where dealers are found to have financed their purchases by selling illegal substances.

Police have seized are cash, cars and even holiday homes.

In recognition of the increase, Sutton police is one of five Metropolitan Police boroughs to have been given a cash award.

Sutton was given the second highest reward of £15,000 to go towards front line policing and crime prevention.

Sutton's Borough Commander, Detective Chief Superintendent Guy Ferguson, said: "Those involved in crimes are motivated by greed and selfishness.

"Taking their ill-gotten gains off them is not only popular with hard-working, law-abiding people, but also makes the criminals think twice about their activities."

The highest award of £20,000 went to Tower Hamlets. Other boroughs to receive awards were Westminster, Hillingdon and Croydon.
