Work has begun to create a direct route from East Croydon Station to the Whitgift Centre.
Improvements will include widened footways, new paving, plants and seating and a new look for Dingwall Road roundabout.
The route will go from the new bridge at East Croydon Station to Wellesley Road.
A new pedestrian crossing which will give direct access to the Whitgift Shopping Centre is expected to be completed by July 2014.
From Monday July 22, all buses that use Lansdowne Road will be diverted for three weeks while the road is upgraded to create an improved walking and cycling route.
Councillor Jason Perry, cabinet member for planning, regeneration and transport, said: “The improved pedestrian and cycle link between East Croydon station and the Whitgift Shopping Centre is a major part of our regeneration plans for the town centre."
