I was a little surprised by Mr Khan's letter 'Politics should be left out of community events'.

I think he gave his allegiances away when he concluded his missive by trying to pour praise upon the local Conservative Councillors; in my view they are worthy only of scorn.

As a resident of Waddon I am delighted to see Wandle Park improved and am looking forward to the improvements due to my local park, Waddon Ponds, that has been recently announced.

However, it should not be lost that around 500m as the crow flies (or should I say as the wind blows), the Conservatives in Croydon are supporting the building of an incinerator to burn thousands of tonnes of waste from south London and beyond.

Pollution levels in Croydon will increase as will the number of lorries on the streets.

This is the insidious way in which the local Conservative Councillors play politics.

They stood at the last election on a platform of opposing an Incinerator in Croydon or on its borders.

That was the pledge they made to the residents of Waddon and then when given the chance Councillors George-Hilly, Harris and Hoar all voted in favour.

Not only did they vote in favour of the Incinerator but those residents who received the newspaper style propaganda from Viridor who plan to build the incinerator will be interested to know that their Conservative councillors actually helped deliver it through your doors.

I wonder what they got in return for such an act of generosity? Certainly there is nothing on their registers of interests that says one way or the other.

Mr Khan should not be concerned by local residents who want to give out some leaflets or balloons.

He should, however, be concerned by those who seemingly mislead the residents in order to win an election; that is precisely what the Conservatives in Waddon did and for which they should be eternally ashamed.

The incinerator will burn 275,000 tonnes of waste. Operated on behalf of four London boroughs it will make up any shortfall in capacity by shipping in waste from elsewhere.

The two 100m chimneys have been heightened to reduce the pollutions levels in Sutton but this will increase pollution deposited on Croydon.

Every year 300 tonnes of nitrogen dioxide will be emitted from the facility.

They claim they lorry journeys will reduce after the four year construction phase to 666 per day (yes the number of the Devil!); but overall lorry journeys will increase from 2024 onwards blighting the lives of local residents.

Joy Prince, Robert Canning and Andrew Pelling will be excellent Labour candidates for 2014 and will become councillors who will be honest with the residents they represent.
