Chessington councillor Margaret Thompson has been appointed Kingston Council's new lead member for children.

She will replace coun Liz Green as lead member for the newly-named Children’s Health & Wellbeing portfolio.

Coun Green was elected leader of the council following the departure last month of Derek Osbourne, in the wake of his arrest on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children.

The announcement was made on the same day Ofsted rated the borough's child protection services "inadequate" for the second year in a row.

The report listed several areas of concern, including children being left in unsatisfactory and risky circumstances for too long, historically poor social work practice and a strained relationship with the police.

But it also noted the council had built strong foundations in other areas that would ultimately improve the service.

Coun Thompson was previously lead member for adult services, and will now be replaced in that role by Coun Trevor Heap.

Elsewhere, finance and resources lead member Rolson Davies has been appointed deputy leader - but will continue in his portfolio role.
