A budding cricketer has been praised for being an Outstanding Young Leader.

Priya Wadher, 16, from Wallington, was recognised for her contributions and dedication to national inner-city cricket project, StreetChance.

Priya Wadher was presented with Outstanding Young Leader at Lord’s by former England cricketer Ashley Giles on Wednesday July 3.

The project is an inner-city cricket initiative run in partnership between the Cricket Foundation and Barclays Spaces for Sports which aims to divert young people away from youth crime and anti-social behaviour through free, year-round cricket sessions.

Miss Wadher has been going to the sessions since 2011 and last year joined the Young Ambassadors group which allows participants who display leadership qualities to guide the direction of the their local projects.

Coach Beth Evans, said: "Priya has been a wonderful asset to the StreetChance Sutton Girls’ session. She has used her passion for cricket and worked incredibly hard to get more local girls playing the sport she loves. She’s displayed strong leadership skills in taking the session forward, so I’m really proud she’s won this award."

Miss Wadher, said: "I'm overwhelmed – I feel very pleased to have been recognised in this way at Lord’s cricket ground. I’ve worked really hard on StreetChance over the past year and had a lot of fun and this is a brilliant way to be thanked.

StreetChance Sutton Girls’ session is held on Fridays 4.30-6.30pm at The Indoor Cricket School, Plough Lane, Sutton, SM6 8JQ. For further details, please email: streetchance@cricketfoundation.org.uk or visit www.streetchance.org.
