Two stars of the silver screen celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with champagne.

Diamond couple Don and Maureen Dabney, who live in Worcester Park, first met when they were just eight and nine-years old and say the secret to a long marriage is love and a good sense of humour.

The pair met at Ridge Road Primary School, now called Brookfield Primary School, when Mrs Dabney, now 80, was eight and Mr Dabney, now 81, was nine.

They went on their first date - to see It's Magic starring Doris Day at the Granada Cinema in North Cheam - when Mrs Dabney was 16 and then got married when she was 20 on June 6, 1953.

The pair ran pubs all over London including at the George in Morden, which is now a Harvester, and got into acting in later years.

The couple, who have a daughter and two grandchildren, performed together in a Harry Potter film, with Mrs Dabney playing a Dragonminder and Mr Dabney featuring in a scene with actress Imelda Staunton.

Mrs Dabney also featured in Eastenders as Mrs Finnerty, a friend of Albert Square stalwart Dot Cotton. Last year Mr Dabney became London's oldest Santa, donning the beard to play the part at a Christmas fair.

Mrs Dabney, whose first job was as a reporter on the now-defunct Wimbledon Borough News, said: "Our anniversary was lovely. On the actual weekend we took the family away, all eight of us to Folkestone and then the following weekend was a surprise - the family had bought us tickets to see Singing in the Rain and we stayed at the Thistle Hotel.

"I don't think there's any great secret to having a long marriage - but you've got to have love and a good sense of humour!"

The pair are retired now but still travel the country to do ballroom dancing together.
