A dad-of-three has penned a book about his experience adopting his son to encourage more men to consider adoption.

Shegun Olusanya, from Purley, started writing the book four years after adopting his son Joshua, at the age of two, in 2009.

The 51-year-old's book 'My Adoption Story,' details the trials and frustrations he and his wife Seyi expereienced as they tried to conceive naturally, and using IVF before turning to adoption to extend their family.

The IT Consultant who is now an adoption champion for the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), did not want to adopt, but now hopes his experience will inspire other men who may have similar reservations to the ones he had about adopting.

Mr Olusanya said: "When my wife suggested adoption I wasn't keen. I didn't know whether I could love another person's child.

"With a woman it's different they have maternal instinct but with men, I think there is that concern about whether they can love the child.

"When I go to talks, it is always the men who seem detached from it all and I find it is generally the men who don't want to go down the adoption road."

Five years after adopting Joshua, now nine, Mrs Olusanya gave birth to Imole aged four and a year later to Johnnie who is now three.

Mr Olusanya said: "I was worried about loving my adopted son, but as soon as he came home it was like he had always been part of our life. Now we have two birth children and I love them all the same.

"This book is for anyone, particularly those thinking of adopting or fostering. I do want a lot of men to read it because I have been where they are and felt the way they are feeling.

"I would love for men from the afro-Caribbean community to read it because there are so many black and mixed heritage children in the system looking for a home.

"I hope the book will help more black, childless men confront the fears and stigma they associate with adoption."
